The Handicap, and Why the Draw Disappears

A straight football market has three outcomes and one of them — the draw — takes your money without either side losing. Asian handicaps remove it by giving one team a head start expressed in goals, which reduces the market to two outcomes and tightens the price. The result is a market with a lower margin than the 1X2 board next to it, which is why most serious volume on European fixtures runs through it.

A -1.0 line means the favourite starts a goal behind for settlement purposes: win by two or more and your bet wins, win by exactly one and the handicap result is a draw so your stake returns, anything else loses. A -0.5 line has no draw possibility at all — the team simply has to win. Half lines are the simplest to read and the ones to start with if handicaps are new to you.

A -0.75 line is not a line at all — it is two bets. Half your stake goes on -0.5 and half on -1.0, and they settle independently. Win by two or more and both halves win. Win by exactly one and the -0.5 half wins while the -1.0 half is a push, so you collect half the expected return. Draw or lose and both halves lose. That is the half-win outcome that confuses people the first time they meet it, and it is not an error in the settlement.

Stake ৳1,000 on the favourite at -0.75, priced 1.95. Half — ৳500 — sits on -0.5 and half on -1.0. If the favourite wins 3-1, both halves win: ৳500 × 1.95 twice, returning ৳1,950 for a profit of ৳950. If the favourite wins 1-0, the -0.5 half returns ৳975 and the -1.0 half returns your ৳500 stake, so ৳1,475 comes back for a profit of ৳475. If the match ends level, the whole ৳1,000 is lost. Three outcomes, three quite different results, all from one line.

When a handicap beats the straight price

When one side is clearly stronger and the win price has collapsed to 1.25, a -1.0 handicap at 1.90 gives you a usable price for an outcome you already expected. When two sides are evenly matched, the handicap adds nothing and the straight market is simpler. And when you are unsure, the handicap is not a hedge — it is a different bet with different failure modes, so treat it as one.

A four-leg multi does not carry the bookmaker's margin once, it carries it four times over. If each leg is priced with about four per cent of margin, the combined slip gives up roughly sixteen per cent before a ball is kicked. The advertised return looks enormous because the probabilities are multiplied together, and so is the house edge. Multis are entertainment; singles are where a considered opinion actually pays.
